Trumpeter Lucia Ianniello presents her unique drumless group for her second album on SLAM. This album concludes the research around the figure of Horace Tapscott and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (P.A.P.A.), which the trumpeter started tracing with her first album ‘Maintenant’.

On this album, in addition to her original compositions, there are songs from the P.A.P.A.’s repertoire, especially those of Horace Tapscott and Jesse Sharps, Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq and Michael Session who Tapscott used to delegate to conduct the Arkestra in the ’70s. There is also a song of pianist and singer, Linda Hill, one of the founders and a very active member of the movement of which the Arkestra was the musical and collective expression.

The quintet gives an original interpretation of this repertoire. The arrangements are drumless while the voice (except for two songs with a text), is instrumental. There is a lot of space for collective improvisation and the research of music expression goes towards the timbre and melody, away from mere virtuosity.

Lucia Ianniello: C trumpet and objects
Diana Torti: voice
Andrea Polinelli: soprano & alto saxophones, flute
Paolo Tombolesi: keyboards
Cristina Patrizi: electric bass

“Ianniello’s group of five contains no drums, but adds vocals to its two-horn, two rhythm lineup…Recorded in an intimate setting of a 12th century church in a live concert, the music seems centred on the dynamics of group playing, rather than on featured soloists of its individual members. Interpretations of Horace Tapscott’s “Ballad for Samuel” and Michael Session’s “Quagmire Manor at Five AM” are the more traditional tracks of this largely adventuresome concert, which includes compositions from Ianniello, Jesse Sharps, and Fuasi Abdul Khaliq.” – Don Lerman, Cadence Magazine

“A wondrous concert in Italy. Ianniello’s tone is warm, whether open as on the floating “Our Summer” with Polinelli’s flute or the free bopping “Eternal Egypt Suite” with Tombolesi’s exotic piano, or muted as on her dreamy “Other” with Torti’s voice serving up a modern madrigal. A pair of Horace Tapscott pieces, the lyrical “Little Africa” and bluesy “Ballad For Samuel” display the melodic flexibility of the band, with Torti’s voice creating rich textures with the leader’s horn. Glowing embers of sound.” – George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Recorded in the Church of St. Sebastian, Acuto (FR) Italy on 10th August, 2016
