A collection of eight compositions from Pakistan, Argentina, Syria, Japan, Kenya, Hungary and Italy give the Italian group Triologos – with a conventional lineup of saxophone, bass, drums – a very distinctive sound and approach to their music.

Each member of Triologos has a positive role in the music creation, resulting in a style of performance that grabs the listener’s interest on many different levels. The inventiveness of the percussion and drums complementing and enveloping the saxophone lines. This collection, recorded August 2014, is the outcome of years of work by the trio towards a fresh style of jazz, which mixes spiritual and free jazz with world music influences.

Paolo Cerboni Bajardi: tenor and soprano saxophones
Bruno Cerboni Bajardi: drums, percussion
Mirco Ballabene: double bass
Massimo Bonomo: piano (tracks 5 & 7)

“This is one of the tastiest jazz trios I’ve heard in a while…All eight tracks were well-executed, with high energy and high talent, but it was the spirited sax playing on “Amor Mi Fa Cantar (Ancient song)” that received my vote for personal favourite (and, as on all the compositions, the bass and percussion play seamlessly throughout).” – Rotcod Zzaj, Improvijazzation Nation

“The Slam label has a way of introducing to new musicians from both Italy and South America who were previously unknown to most of us. Often with great results. This is again the case here…”Sanson Ki Mala” comes from Pakistan, the trio sound rich and warm with austere tenor sax, quick, spirited bass in the centre and nimble hand drums backing. Mr. Ballabene’s delicate, magic bass is again the heart of “Amor me fa Cantar” with some lovely soprano sax from Paolo Bajardi. Each song has a haunting quality with a melody that sounds ancient. This is a lovely, heartfelt effort that sounds better or more enchanting each time I hear it.” – Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

“If you are a fan of The Gentle Side of John Coltrane, this trio is for you. The eight songs here feature Paolo in settings ranging from the mourning tenor on the somber “Sanson Ki Mala” and delicate “Kothbiro” (with Massimo Bonomo guesting on piano) to a changing soprano with hand percussion on the rumbling “Punay.” Flowing drapes in the wind on “Ninna Nanna” and the middle eastern “Amor Mi Fa Cantar” is as reflective as watching the red sun set. Wondrous!” – George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

“There are no complementary roles in this trio; each musician is central to the compositions so that one is moved between diverse levels of mindfulness and curiosity as themes develop, but are tattered, perverted and lost. The music is truly ethereal.” – Ken Cheetham, Jazz Views

“A rather understated effort of sizable impact…The group rarely ups a tempo and Paolo Bajardi maintains, for the most part, a modest range and an even pacing. It’s all very effective and easy, but not dull, on the ears. Massimo Bonomo (piano) is added on two tracks but even so this remains, in feel, a trio release of subtlety and power.” – Cadence

Recorded in Urbino, Italy 8-10th August 2014.
